Support Ohio’s Technology Credential (TechCred) Program

Support Ohio’s Technology Credential (TechCred) Program
October 10, 2019

Advancements in technology are rapidly changing the 21st century workplace and all over Ohio, there are employers who can’t find people with the skills needed to fill their good-paying jobs. At the same time, there are workers who are looking for better career opportunities but can’t find jobs with the current skills they have. To help ease this transition for workers and businesses, the DeWine-Husted Administration has proposed investing $30 million in our workforce over the biennium by funding 10,000 in-demand technology credentials per year. These micro-credentials take less than a year to complete and prepare incumbent workers for the technology jobs Ohio employers need.

We strongly urge the Senate to provide the requested $30 million for TechCred in the state budget. Please contact your state legislators today and ask them to support investing in Ohio’s workforce through TechCred. To find your representatives and contact them directly, visit www.ohiohouse.gov/members/members-directory and www.ohiosenate.gov/senators

Reasons to support the funding of 10,000 in-demand technology credentials per year through the TechCred program:

  • This program will lead to new jobs and promotions for current employees. Employers will be able to utilize the funding to support and upskill their current workforce and to train new, incoming employees.
  • The program will be employer driven. Businesses will propose credentials that are needed in their company and industry, ensuring that individuals are earning credentials that have market value and will help them progress in their career path.
  • Ohio is preparing its workers to transition with technology. As technology automates repetitive tasks, workers will be able to shift their focus to more fulfilling and cognitively demanding work. The TechCred program will help ease this transition for workers and businesses.
  • TechCred focuses on technology skills and credentials. There are almost 400,000 technology related jobs in Ohio, with over 9,000 added in just one year. All industries are experiencing changes due to the introduction of new technologies in the workplace. TechCred will train workers to fill the growing skills gap caused by advancements in technology across industries.
