Feature Friday: Iron Workers Local 55
July 09, 2021

Happy Feature Friday, where every Friday the Chamber team will highlight one of our fantastic members by repping them for the day and telling the community more about them.  This week's Feature Friday is: Iron Workers Local 55!

About Iron Workers Local 55: CELEBRATING 118 YEARS!

Iron Workers Local 55 is comprised of more than 1,000 of the most highly-skilled and trained construction professionals throughout Northwest Ohio.  They are a vital part of the building and construction industry throughout the city of Toledo and across Northwest Ohio, contributing to the countless buildings and structures that adorn our area’s cityscapes. Their members excel in a physically demanding and dangerous trade in order to ensure the safety of area businesses, residents, and visitors by maintaining construction projects that are structurally sound and up to code.

They have been serving their contractors and eighteen counties with quality work for 100 years, continuously improving their industry by aggressively training the next generation of construction apprentices and upgrading the skills of current craftsmen through their state-of-the-art training facility. They strive to keep current with technology for excellent service and safety at the worksite for their members.

Additionally, their members work hard to improve the Northwest Ohio communities in which they also live. They shop at local stores and donate their time and resources to local charities. They serve as mentors in not-for-profit youth programs and serve on community boards. They support local sports teams, including the University of Toledo Rockets and Bowling Green State University Falcons, for whose football departments they sponsor the “Iron Man of the Game” awarded to a weekly top performer on the field as decided by the fans.

Some well known projects that have been completed by Iron Workers Local 55 include: viaducts for Wabash Railroad, a bridge for Toledo Railway and Terminal Company, the 16-story Spitzer Building, Nicholas Building, Devilbliss and Central Catholic High Schools, Commodore Perry Hotel, Famous Players Theater, Toledo Blade building, Federal Building, the Owens-Illinois Fiberglass Tower, the Bay Shore Station, the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Plant, the Medical College of Ohio, the Regional Criminal Justice Center, the Islamic Center of Greater Toledo, the Summit Center, Fifth Third Field, Radisson Hotel, School of Art and Business Administration buildings at BGSU, the Visual Arts Center at the Toledo Museum of Art and the Valentine Theater.  In 2007, Local 55 completed work on the Veterans’ Glass City Skyway, 8,800-foot long cable-stayed bridge that crosses the Maumee River. The bridge remains the single largest project in the Ohio Department of Transportation history.
