New Member: Seneca County General Health District

With offices in both Tiffin and Fostoria, Seneca County General Health District’s mission is preventing disease, promoting wellness, and protecting the environment for all residents. Health District staff are committed to providing top-notch services that lead our communities to better health.

Seneca County Health District recently became accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). National public health accreditation is designed to help standardize and improve public health practices and services offered in health districts nationwide. The multi-year process requires close inspection of core procedures, processes, and policies to ensure that the health district not only complies with the rigorous standards set by PHAB, but that it also continuously improves both how it operates and the quality of services that it provides to local residents.

The governing body for the Seneca County General Health District is the nine-member Seneca County Board of Health. Local elected officials appoint Board of Health members. Five members are appointed by the District Advisory Council, made up of village mayors, township trustees, and a county commissioner. The cities of Tiffin and Fostoria each appoint two members. One Board member must be a physician. Their responsibilities include policy development, resource stewardship, legal authority, oversight, continuous improvement, and partner engagement.

The Seneca County General Health District provides numerous services to the community, including immunizations; health inspections at restaurants, pools, the landfill, and other public facilities; school nursing; senior health clinic; WIC and breastfeeding support; public health emergency preparedness and response; communicable disease control and investigation; and coordinated naloxone distribution across the county.
