Pumpkin Composting

Pumpkin Composting
October 24, 2022

For the second year in a row, The District is happy to share they will be holding another Pumpkin Composting collection at the county fairgrounds in all three counties. For the month of November there will be drop off bins located in the fairgrounds of each county where residents were able to drop off their pumpkins and gourds used for seasonal decorations which would then be delivered to an area farm where they will be composted and their nutrients will be brought back to the soil.

Pumpkins decompose at a much slower rate when they are landfilled. Their nutrients also stay confined to the landfill losing their potential to help nourish the local environment.

The District’s partnership with Go Zero gives your fall pumpkins and gourds a more sustainable ending. and reduces waste generated in the landfill. The pumpkins will get delivered to Andre Farms in Wauseon, OH where they will be specially composted. Compost that leaves their farm has 300% the plant nutrition of topsoil and can be used as a substitute for traditionally manufactured petroleum based fertilizers. Even if you don't participate in our pumpkin compost drop off we still encourage you to compost the pumpkins yourself or find your own farm that will take the pumpkins to feed their livestock or add to their own composting.
