Congratulations to Mrs. Church's 8th grade STEM class of Tiffin City Schools for cutting the ribbon to celebrate the completion of Cooper's Corner!
The story of Cooper's Corner began when school counselor and facility dog handler, Melissa Mellott, was expressing her dreams for an outdoor space for Cooper. From there, the goal of making this dream a reality was set into motion! Mrs. Church's STEM class was awarded a $5,000 grant by the Battelle Corporation through the Ohio STEM Learning Network. They were the only school in Seneca County to receive this grant reward!
Cooper's Corner is a space where he can be let off the leash, but also gives opportunity to interact with students who are struggling with mental health issues in a different environment outside of school walls. Students have also gained an understanding of how important Cooper is to the student bodies' well being. Also incorporated into the space is a welcoming outdoor space for students to have an opportunity to learn in a different classroom setting. The TMS students have expanded their understanding by reading articles about the connection and benefits between the design of environmental spaces and mental health.
Cooper's Corner would not have been made possible without the awesome students and their vision for Cooper and the space, the community partners of Bryce Kuhn of Tiffin Parks & Rec, Brian Bilger of Bilger's lawn and landscaping, Dan Vera, and National Machinery! The design for the space and the sign to mark Cooper's Corner was part of a class contest where all students submitted their concepts by using 3D modeling software and the knowledge they learned from their guest speakers.
We are so excited to see how this space will continue to develop and serve so many in the Seneca County community.
